When ZSL heard about the Microsoft Dynamics Marketplace, a website where partners can post their solutions for prospective customers, the company was quick to join. “The customer buying habit for add-ons was already to purchase over the web,” says Vel. “In fact, 90 percent of our leads for add-on sales came through that channel. When Microsoft made the Microsoft Dynamics Marketplace available, we saw that it could help us build the validity of our add-ons, provide a venue for showcasing them, and ultimately help us further grow our sales because it made it easier for customers to find the solutions they needed.”

In adopting the Microsoft Dynamics Marketplace, ZSL has taken a slow but steady approach. “We started with one of our Microsoft Dynamics CRM add-ons and will make our nearly 20 other add-ons available in the near future,” says Vel. “When we made our add-ons available on the marketplace, we also began to incorporate new best practices, including providing support materials, case studies, and links to demos on our own site in our listing, to help drive traffic. We will also soon begin to include keywords to help in search engine optimization.”

Regarding the process of making ZSL add-on solutions available, Vel notes that, “We found it really easy to make our first add-on available on the Microsoft Dynamics Marketplace. We just submitted it through a short certification process and it was soon listed on the marketplace.”

After six months on the marketplace, CRM Email Preview has garnered 10 inquiries and one sale—all with minimal effort. Says Vel, “We’re still in the early stages of using the Microsoft Dynamics Marketplace, but we, Microsoft, and many other partners are working hard to promote it. In the future, customers won’t search the web for add-on solutions; instead, they will go straight to the marketplace—and that will be a huge value-add for us.”

It’s no surprise that N.J. companies are going after this market, as the state has a robust life sciences/healthcare business core. Further, the market for these mobile apps is predicted to be strong despite the economy. Various sources believe 30 percent of smartphone users will access a mobile health app by 2015. Technavio (London) forecasts the global mobile health app market reaching $4.1 billion by 2014. A key factor contributing to this increase is worldwide growth of remote patient monitoring, the firm says.

According to Yuva Raj, head of ZSL’s R & D division IDEA Lab (Edison), who presented at the Top Ten Technology Trends meeting sponsored by NJTC last week, "Smartphone applications will become the killer applications for mobile health solutions." Raj has put together some best practices for mobile healthcare applications aimed at medical professionals. First among them is that an app should reduce manual errors and increase employee productivity and efficiency. Patient-oriented apps should increase accuracy of compliance and both consumer and healthcare provider satisfaction. Automating manual processes should reduce labor costs, Raj said. Most important, health apps should ensure the security and privacy of access to critical data.

AbbaDox, a mobile app that ZSL developed for one of its ISVs, fulfills the medical community’s need to sign patient records and documents on the go.

Chennai, India, September 29, 2011 : ZSL (Zylog Systems Ltd) has earned a spot in the Dataquest’s IT industry survey for the Top 20 software exporters across India for the fiscal year 2010-2011.

Excerpts from the findings of the survey:

While IT services exports jumped back, growing at 21% (vs 6% in FY 10) and engineering services exports grew 22% (compared to 6% in the previous year), BPO exports growth slowed down, growing just 7%, versus 13% in the previous year. The total services exports from India in FY 11 stands at $64 billion, including IT software/services and BPO.

“The slowdown in 2009 and 2010 made the industry more efficient and mature. With the growth now back, the Indian IT industry can look forward to more depth, innovation and global spread in 2011-12,” said Pradeep Gupta, Publisher of CyberMedia India. The survey will be published in the forthcoming issue of the journal dated September 15, 2011

Need Help Shopping? MyBantu Gives it a Go With APIs

MyBantu is an interesting little mashup, available as an iPhone app, an Android app, and a website. Its goal is to make shopping for anything, especially restaurants and movies, easier and more social. It uses Yelp API, Netflix API and various others to make it happen. It’s very similar in idea to Siri, the “ultimate mashup” that Apple later gobbled up in the largest mashup acquisition ever.

Unlike Siri, myBantu doesn’t have integrated speech to text technology, but it does have decent natural language processing. It does some of the things Siri does, but lacks the ability to search weather reports and book taxis. MyBantu seems more focused, being mostly about helping you have a fun night out, where Siri seems a bit more comprehensive with its personal assistant features.

Furthermore, MonoTouch allows you to address all the unique functions of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. And the big plus: You needn’t learn any Objective-C to master MonoTouch!

The Indian economy continued to demonstrate consistent growth underpinned by strong domestic demand, after emerging from the financial crisis. Various stimuli packages, coupled with positive economic and financial policy initiatives in the past couple of years, have helped India Inc to chart a progressive path. ‘India’s Top 500 Companies 2010’ captures the growth and business dynamics of leading Indian companies in 2010.
Some key highlights from the publication are as follows:

The recovery phase of FY10 clearly reflected in 37.9% y-o-y growth in average market capitalisation of Top 500 Companies to र 47,166.6 bn, accounting for 86.7% of the total average market capitalisation of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in FY10.
Further, aggregate total income of Top 500 Companies, which stood at र 29,427.2 bn and grew 5.9% y-o-y was equivalent to approximately 47.9% of India’s GDP at market price. This underscores the important role played by Top 500 Companies in the country’s economic development.
The double-digit bottom line growth of 24.1% of the Top 500 Companies that is growing at a faster pace than the top line, is yet another positive indicator of the healthy quotient of the economy.
Growth in PAT resulted in direct benefits for investors in the form of dividend, which stood at र 732.5 bn and grew 34.3% y-o-y. Banks have been the top dividend payers since the past three editions of Top 500 Companies. However, their contribution in total dividend decreased from 15.7% in the 2009 Edition to 13.6% in the 2010 Edition.
In terms of ownership, among the Top 500 Companies, private sector companies dominated in their contribution to aggregate income (49.3%), profit (52.3%), net worth (57.6%) and dividend (43.9%).
However, performance of foreign companies has been far better than private sector companies and public sector enterprises. Foreign companies recorded robust numbers with the highest growth in total income (13.8%) and PAT (39.8%), and higher NPM (11.8%) and RONW (24.7%).
The Top 500 Companies were able to manage their debt more efficiently during FY10. Debtequity ratio of these companies, excluding banks and NBFCs, improved from 0.7 times in FY09 to 0.6 times in FY10 and their interest coverage ratio improved from 6 times in FY09 to 7.5 times in FY10.
Reflecting the depth and dynamism of India Inc., this year’s edition includes 46 new entrants compared with 42 in the previous edition. Of these, 27 new entrants outperformed their sector averages with either better PAT or top line growth and operating efficiency or a commensurately strong equity performance, ensuring their inclusion in this year’s Top 500.

Sometime back when I was talking to one of my colleague about Virtual Desktop, he was mentioning that the virtual desktop user can carry their desktop in a flash drive; this triggered me to think about the technological changes that we have to accept in coming years. The technological innovation takes us to new heights and certainly the growth is not going to stop here. We have to start preparing ourselves to adopt the changes the way we operate in coming years. We are in the age of technological sophistication and its all different story to imagine running a day without all these!

I will try to discuss about the blend of current and future trends, so that I can maintain my thought flow.

Today Enterprises started getting into
- Cloud computing where there is no physical presence of hardware or infrastructure;
- Mobile Technologies that took almost everything into it in addition to Phone capability;
- Virtual Desktop or Virtual Workspace that helps you to access your desktop from anywhere and anytime using any device, infact you can carry your desktop in a flash drive;
- Social Media & Network connects people across globe and business users started utilizing the social media heavily to run their business successfully;
- Green Technology that helps reducing the use of natural sources;
- Unified Communication makes communication unified and easy; Wireless connection to the world and what not!

Is this the limit to the growth? Absolutely NO, it’s not the limit for the technological growth. There are lot more to expect in coming years, and I have listed few that may already started coming out or conceived in someone innovative brain somewhere in this world. The article is not about the technologies available for high profile people working for NASA or military, it’s about the technology that may be available for the common users.

In coming years, highly sophisticated Tablets and Smartphone devices may replace all laptops and notebooks. Currently desktops are almost replaced by laptops and notebook, and soon it’s time for laptops to retire! Every new OS comes with touch control to support all tablets devices. Microsoft is already working toward touch interface OS with its Windows 8 Operating System (that will also work with traditional mouse & keyboard) to sustain in the OS market. Going forward the OS installed in the devices may even recognize the person using the device by touch sensor technology, and the OS may get serve them based on what is authorized for the user!

We are moving toward the world of complete virtualization, our server is virtual, our desktop is virtual, our storage is virtual, our money is virtual and we can even develop applications virtually. Virtualization tries to reach all the corners of the human activities. In coming years the user need not even have a flash drive to access their desktop/laptop, the user will be able to access the work environment or personal environment using a home TV, TV in the flight, smartphone, or any device that has atleast browser capability and internet. With this virtual environment, the user will be able to access the local/home printer, map any local or remote drives, access USB devices connected, and access all virtual folders from anywhere anytime. With growing video and audio technologies, it won’t be surprise for the common technological user to have access to virtual meeting, person virtually present in a meeting hall or conference room without travelling physically! They can hand shake and discuss face to face, but virtually.

Technology has taken the marketing and advertisement world to next level, where the users can experience interactive videos, track specific object in a video, and can play relevant video based on the selection of the object in the video. In coming years, users can order and complete payment transactions by interacting directly with the playing video and audio instruction.

Healthcare is one of the industries that utilize the technology to the best, and doctors, nurses or care takers are enjoying the use of technology for electronic recording, electronic prescriptions, digitizing patient and all medical records. Sooner, we will get into paperless medical systems where almost every medical related activities and notes will be in electronic format.

The technology brought every banking operation into mobile device, using mobile banking one can deposit checks, can check the transactions, transfer fund and what not. In coming years we are going to see Mobile Banking is going to take over all the manual operations and mobile devices will become your credit card, debit card, and even it may completely replace your wallet.

It’s Apple that transformed the way we think about Mobile devices and its usage, when Apple launched iPhone in 2007. Other players like RIM, Google (Android) and Microsoft started adopting the changes quickly for their survival in mobile space. Apple made almost all the industry to look at the revolutionized innovation a smartphone can deliver and help the business growth irrespective of the industry.

Comparing to other industry adoption to new technologies, healthcare and pharma industry realized about the latest technological adoption during later years between 2000 and 2010. Now it’s the Healthcare and Pharma Industry keeping itself in the edge of all emerging technology. According to various study, it’s going to consume reasonable amount of investment for developing efficient Mobile Healthcare application in coming years!

There are various healthcare sectors looking for comprehensive Mobile application for various purposes that include EMR Data Intelligence & Reporting, Monitoring, Scheduling, Payments, Accounting, Tracking and what not!

So it will be appropriate for me to discuss about few key factors that any healthcare Mobile application designer or developer or an organization to consider while developing Mobile Applications for life saving industry – Healthcare.

For any healthcare application, security and compliance goes hand in hand for its essentiality to adopt all healthcare compliances and regulations include HIPAA, HITECH, ITRF Regulation or PCI/PHI compliances. It is absolutely essential that the Mobile application should follow the compliance and regulations base on the Healthcare sector the application will be used. The designer or developer should consider how securely the data is transmitted between end-points, and how securely the data are used. Have to think about how to secure the critical information during unlike events such as the if device is being stolen, hacked or reached wrong hands. Have to apply efficient encryption technologies, authorization and authentications.

It’s good and smart way to develop Mobile Healthcare Application that supports variety of Mobile Platform, so that the users need not stick to any specific device and they will be free to choose the right device for their need and purpose. It will help the solution providers to implement the solution to the hospitals, clinics or pharmacy without insisting on the device change or force to get the device that the application supports.

Other critical factors we should keep in mind while designing or developing Mobile Application (this factors are not only for Healthcare Application, it applicable for all Mobile Application developments)

Bandwidth – the application designer/developer should design the application assuming that the radio signal is often be lower bandwidth.
Memory – though the mobile devices started having good memory sizes, still it is not close to PC or Laptop, so the mobile application should not be a heavy lifter!
Energy – the designer or the developer should avoid programming the application in such a way that certain activities should not increase battery energy usage and reduce battery life. For example an activity that transmits the geo-location very often will drain the battery soon.
Data Transmission – Mobile network cost is based on the volume of data we transmit, so the application should be designed and developed in such a way it doesn’t transmit the same data every time it connects with back end systems or vice versa.
Presentation & User-Friendly – the mobile application screen design should be simple, clear and clean, avoid cumbersome texts and inputs. Consider right size text, buttons and controls as most of the operations are trigger by figure touch on the screens. Have to consider screen-size of the device the application is developed for!
Certainly any automated application should reduce manual error and not different for Mobile Healthcare applications as well. A study points that CPOE & Medication Administration Application reduced manual errors up to 38% and 55% respectively.
The Mobile Healthcare Application should help increase employee productively & efficiency, and enable the care taker or Medical Practitioner to take care of more patients. A study indicates EHR increased employee productivity up to 24%. According to a private study, a good Mobile Health Care application saves average of 39 mins for Health Care employees to provide more time to patient care.
Eventually the performance of the application should increase customer/healthcare provider satisfaction and serve more patients.
It’s obvious that the Mobile Healthcare Application should reduce labor cost by automating the manual process; rather it should force the customer to increase the labor to handle and manage the application exclusively to make it work.
And we can’t certainly ignore the fact that the success of these Mobile Healthcare solutions requires a holistic and integrated approach; capable to integrate with heterogeneous systems or application.

I would like to conclude this article with an interesting fact – by 2015 more than one third of 1.4 billion smartphone users will use at least one Mobile HealthCare Applications. Having the right Mobile Healthcare application will enable us to play an important role in this space.

First of its Kind Research Report Identifies the World’s Top VARs, MSPs and Channel Partners in Cloud Computing

ZSL has landed on Nine Lives Media Inc.’s first-ever Talkin’ Cloud 50, a unique list and free research report identifying the world’s top 50 VARs, MSPs and IT service providers in cloud computing.

The Talkin’ Cloud 50 report, available at http://www.talkincloud.com/biz-talk/talkin-cloud-50/, is based on data from Talkin’ Cloud’s online survey, completed in March 2011. The resulting report, overseen by Editorial Director Joe Panettieri, recognizes top VARs and MSPs in the cloud based on cloud-centric revenues, applications offered, users supported, and additional variables. Foundational Understanding of Cloud Computing

Near universal agreement exists that cloud computing is the Web-based delivery of a service that provides extensible, elastic, and multi-tenant access to computing resources. The definition gets fuzzy from there. What does it mean to be “elastic” or “extensible”? Some groups include “ease of use” or “ease of deployment” in their definitions, but these are subjective measures. And, of course, simple definitions tend to breakdown when actual services are tied to them. A Web-based customer relationship management (CRM) solution such as Salesforce.com is generally considered a staple in the cloud computing portfolio, but is a search engine such as Google or Microsoft’s Bing? Web-based email services such as Hotmail and Yahoo are part of cloud computing, but are emails delivered to a remote client over an SSL or HTTPS connection from an on-premise Microsoft Exchange server also a part of the cloud computing universe?

A good starting point for defining cloud computing is the definition crafted by NIST. The government research and standard setting agency admits that its definition is fluid and subject to change. However, the NIST definition4, now in its fifteenth iteration, provides clear tenets for what constitutes the basics of cloud computing as a technology and delivery mechanism. The NIST definition is:

Cloud Computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. This cloud model promotes availability and is composed of five essential characteristics (on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service), three service models (software as a service, platform as a service, and infrastructure as a service), and four deployment models (private cloud, community cloud, public cloud, and hybrid cloud).

As an addendum, NIST makes the following note about the nature of cloud computing:

Cloud software takes full advantage of the cloud paradigm by being service oriented with a focus on statelessness, low coupling, modularity, and semantic interoperability.

In other words, cloud computing isn’t necessarily proprietary and should have near universal interoperability and communications channels to ensure access to and usability of data.

The CompTIA Cloud/SaaS Community concurs with NIST’s definition, adding that cloud computing applications, platforms, and infrastructures should guarantee interoperability of solutions, openness in standards, accessibility to resources and data, and portability to different service providers. In our opinion, this openness is necessary for ensuring the sustained adoption and growth of cloud computing by assuring optimal business value to customers.

Bearing the NIST definition in mind, it is helpful to think of cloud computing broadly in two layers: (1) applications and services that encompass packaged cloud apps (SaaS— Software as a Service) and custom cloud apps (developed on PaaS—Platform as a Service), and, (2) the shared network, server, storage, and security resources that constitute IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service).

Cloud computing - A transformative delivery model

Cloud computing is a transformative delivery model that is changing the way technology vendors, distributors, resellers, and consumers think about, approach, and implement IT systems. What exactly “the cloud” is remains a matter of debate, as there are more than two dozen definitions for cloud computing. Further, how the cloud is applied to the conventional IT channel is relatively uncharted. In this paper, the CompTIA Cloud/SaaS Community will provide basic definitions and core characteristics for cloud computing, and put those definitions into a channel context. The paper is a foundational document designed to give the channel community a baseline reference for describing cloud computing and how it fits with the various constituencies that comprise the channel.

Situation Assessment

Escaping the cloud is almost impossible. Cloud computing—or the delivery of application, platform, and infrastructure via the Internet1 as a service—is transforming the way technology vendors produce and distribute their products, as well as the way enterprises and SMB organizations consume technology. The cloud revolution is more than just “webifying” applications. It is a fundamental shift to a new IT architecture grounded in broad availability, multi-tenancy, shared resources, and dynamic capacity. It’s about changing the entire cost structure of technology from a capital expense to a recurring operational expense. And it’s making technology more accessible, productive, and affordable. And that is driving its rapid adoption.

Cloud computing has morphed from a relatively limited set of Web-based services to a full gamut of business products and models. According to analyst firm Gartner, the cloud computing marketplace will grow from $46.4 billion in 2008 to more than $150 billion by 2013. Gartner predicts that 20 percent of all businesses will own no IT infrastructure by 2012 as they will have been completely transformed into near-total cloud consumers. The hype around cloud computing continues to escalate, making it increasingly difficult to separate the marketing buzz from the true implementations of technology and services via the Internet. Nearly any application or service remotely attached to the Internet is now taking on the cloud as both a descriptor and value proposition. No wonder that 59 percent of end users and 64 percent of the channel say that cloud computing needs clearer definitions, according to a new CompTIA study.

Defining cloud computing is more than an academic exercise; it’s a matter of drafting parameters of understanding among marketplace constituents that produce, support, and consume cloud-based services. Creating this shared business and technical vocabulary helps promote effective commerce among all entities in the cloud computing supply chain. Through clear and concise definitions, producers and consumers of services can develop business strategies, implementation plans, business models, and performance metrics for maximizing the potential of a revolutionary delivery system.

Numerous, often competing definitions for cloud computing exist. Most do a fine job of framing what many consider the core tenants of cloud computing, yet only 24 percent of end users and 29 percent of the channel believe the existing definitions are sufficient.

And even these constituents say that the existing definitions are not consistent, according to the CompTIA study. The leading and most generally accepted definition is the one developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which provides for the essential elements and characteristics of the medium. However, many vendors and solution providers believe there is an opportunity to extend the NIST definition by incorporating the unique needs of the IT reseller and services channel into the model.

The CompTIA Cloud/SaaS Community will affirm the NIST cloud computing definition and extend it to include critical considerations for the channel community. Through these contextualized definitions, we aim to provide the entire channel with a common foundation for framing cloud computing discussions and messaging, business planning and modeling, and sales and marketing execution.

Study: 30 Percent of IT Will Be Cloud-Based By 2015

The US cloud computing market is poised for strong growth, as an increasing percentage of enterprise information technology is now becoming cloud-based. According to new research from WaveLength Market Analytics and Winn Technology Group, 58% of medium and large enterprises are already using or planning to use the cloud.

About 41% of that market is comprised of ‘Cloud Pioneers’, those enterprises that actively use or pilot some type of cloud solution. Another 17%, dubbed ‘Cloud Planners’, are planning to implement a cloud solution.

Next to Software-as-a-Service, the most common solutions deployed by companies are Platform-as-a-Service, with 54.8%, hosted private Cloud with 32%, and Infrastructure-as-a-Service with nearly 26%. In the next two years, enterprise IT buyers expect to use more private, public, and hybrid clouds.

Forrester Research Says Social Media Has No Effect on Ecommerce. Really?

On Mashable earlier this week, an article highlights a recent report conducted by Forrester Research and GSI Commerce. The conclusion is that based on data collected 6 months ago, social media has little to no effect on commerce. What?!? You mean that we have been wasting our time, budget and energy creating fictional monetizing methodologies centered on what the world has defined as social commerce?

First of all, it’s completely illogical. Considering the speed in which social media, mobile media and even internet technologies are evolving, is it really reasonable to make such pointed assumptions and claims based on data collected 6 months ago?

I’m not buying that social media has no effect on commerce sales and here are 5 reasons why:

We are programmed to share. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and StumbleUpon provide plug-in tools for all sites (commerce included) to provide visitors with the ability to share what they are buying or considering buying (in some cases wish they could afford). The reach and visibility of their products reached new limits without additional marketing efforts. Now add custom shares like Facebook’s new Send button allow me (and you) to personalize our preferences even more by selecting the individual people within our network that may be interested in what we want to share with them. So while my father would not care to see that I really like the Michael Shannon pumps at DSW, my mom certainly would.

We can get unbelievable discounts if we buy as an ‘online team.’ Another social media commerce site, Groupon, made group buying a common term. In fact, merchants are now on a long waiting list just to post an offer on the site. No money in social media huh?

Social media has its own currency. You cannot argue the fact that if something has its own currency, that is pretty powerful. The Facebook credits system was introduced in 2009 and was originally aimed at the gaming community. Since the recent announcement of Facebook Deals, consumers can now redeem these credits for tangible items.

They have their own shopping mall. The social network has its own shopping mall. How can you say that ecommerce sales are not effected by the ability to place your items in a mall environment visited by millions of shoppers daily?

We live for reviews from our peers. Well maybe we don’t ‘live’ for them, but consider your purchase behavior online. How many times have you tried something or decided to find out more about something because someone within your network either bought it or gave it a nice review.

What the social sites do lack is their ability to deliver an artfully merchandised shopping experience that integrates meaningful content with the ability to transact.

Sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn just aren’t designed for commerce and that’s because they were designed for online communication. For community building. But now retailers have recognized the power the interaction has on the transaction and this is where social media is going to play a huge role.

Retailers and consumer brands have spent a lot of time and money curating a social media community that’s highly engaged and has an emotional connection with their brand. In many cases, they are providing these groups with exclusive content and treating them as lead users. It’s illogical that companies would not want to turn these communities into revenue streams. And that is exactly where they are struggling. How to turn these organic communities into revenue streams without annoying them.

The capabilities and options to retailers and ecommerce merchants who see an opportunity to combine a great branded experience with the ability to purchase within social networks will improve. Technologies will evolve to assist these brands with online merchandising tactics that endorse the experience they are attempting to deliver to their networks and communities. The market is open because the demand is there. Consumer’s trust with online commerce (both on ecommerce sites and on mobile sites & apps) is only getting higher. Seemingly, consumers seem to demand more personal experiences and this is where social media & content engagement will play a complimentary role to one another.

If you don’t want access to a $600 million dollar online economy and don’t feel the need to give 500 million Facebook users even the ability to purchase from you via social media, then don’t. But I would hesitate to stamp a claim on the fact that social media is going to have zero impact on commerce revenues based on 1) data collected 6 months ago and 2) the rapid pace in which social networks are endorsing commerce on their site.

Collaborating with partners is a culture and business priority in our organization. Being a global systems integrator, our goal is to help clients tap into new and emerging markets with solutions that maximize efficiency of their workforce and reduce the time to market.

Having the right people in customer-facing activities that understand the need to collaborate internally and externally with other solution provider partners to meet the market demand is key. We have staffed our global sales team with senior people throughout the organization from day one, so they would be ingrained in the culture and the strategy as we grew. We realized that would enable us to expand our market reach quickly, while retaining our core business values of quality services and solutions delivery. By doing so, we've extended our collaboration and knowledge management effort beyond our internal organization to embrace the "wisdom of crowds."

We've also formalized our peer-to-peer partnership program: "Get IT Together" has grown significantly since its launch in 2004.

That program has helped both ZSL and its partners to leverage each other's core strengths through the mutual goal of delivering the value to the customer faster and cost effectively. Well defined and understood "co-optition" is critical for a peer-to-peer relationship to last longer and yield good results. So create a matrix of areas to work at, including: "complement," "cooperate" and "compete." Remember, the relationship will be very opportunistic and may not last long if the matrix is centered on "compete,"

Finally, a proper support system — with process and people — empowered our sales team to succeed in their partner-to-partner collaborative selling effort, which encouraged them to look for white-space opportunities together.

The connectedness with our "Get IT Together" VAR partners helped us in launching new services and solutions faster with the right go-to market strategies. In that way, we with the reduced risk of testing the waters using the trial and error methods.

Growth VAR: Value Added & Responsive (VAR) Solution Provider

Business executives continue to embrace the "Consumerizaiton of IT," and expect us as their trusted IT advisors to deliver the results. While disruptive technologies — such as Cloud, SaaS and HaaS — continue to find mindshare and market share, the boundaries are becoming blurred between technology manufacturers, distributors and solution providers. The roles each plays change often, based on the customer’s business case. Challenges arise when the boundaries get squeezed but so, too, do new opportunities.

How can we face this IT computing paradigm shift and become a Value Added & Responsive (VAR) Solution Provider?

I think the key to our success in making ZSL as a Value Added and Responsive solution provider hinged on a few things we focused on very closely in the last few years: 1. Collaboration, 2. Innovation and 3.Value creation.

We understood the "Value" in "Value Add" should be more than the relationship and more than cost reduction as business executives expect their internal IT or IT partner to innovate and enable their business growth by delivering the business processes more agile and responsive.

Our business-aligned R&D (called IDEA Lab) effort differentiated us in the market place and created stickiness with the CXOs who are looking for solution providers to help them to carve out their innovation agenda.

Focus in the emerging technologies and strategic alignment with the right vendors enabled our team not only to deliver the business-aligned results but also allowed us to demonstrate our Business Technology Thought Leadership in the industry. CRN and Information Week recognized the value of IDEA Lab’s work by naming it one of the "30 Cloud VARs that Get IT” and “Top 250 Business Technology Innovator."

Innovation: Necessary Engine to Differentiate

Our increased investment within technology R&D and product development has resulted in business-aligned innovation and competitive differentiation.

For example, we have doubled our IDEA Lab headcount in the last six months to pursue our innovation agenda, particularly in the Virtualization, Business Analytics, Enterprise Mobility, Cloud and Green IT areas. As a result, we've designed and deployed the next generation Collaboration and Knowledge Management system, called Enterprise 2.0 SocNet, to drive internal and external ideas in our sourcing and validating process. In addition, our innovative Readiness Assessment and ROI modeling frameworks have helped clients evaluate their IT investments from an objective basis to understand the short-, mid- and long-term impact on TCO.

At the start, in 2009, many of our projects were focused on transformation, increased productivity and operating cost reduction, but our innovative blended sales and delivery process shifted the focus to Growth and Agility.

Many of our business and technology associates spent a good deal of their careers working with Fortune 1000 global clients and understanding the pressure to align IT and Business while trying to innovate something new. We understood the midmarket enterprises’ CIOs resource limitations to innovate and concerns such as operating expenses reduction, security concerns, the requirement for greater productivity, regulatory issues, complexity, etc. So we become their innovation partner, providing strategic and value-added R&D and Product Engineering Services. Our plan: Apply the Fortune 1000 approach, with the workforce experienced in F1000 solutions and methodologies developed for F1000 clients, and tailor them to the midmarket, at a midmarket price.

Our extended collaboration with the leading technology vendor partners and vertical specialized VARs resulted in creating ‘Co-Innovative’ business solutions delivered via a SaaS/Cloud mode — attracting CapEx conscious customers worldwide.

From Value Add to Value Creation

ZSL, being an end-to-end solution provider, works with clients in the areas that impact and grow the core of their businesses beyond "Value Add" to "Value Creation."

The CIOs and IT managers cannot achieve value creation through cost cutting alone. Innovation is required to become a value creator: ZSL focuses on enabling our clients’ IT Managers to be Innovators and not to confuse cost reduction with value creation.

Value creation in today's environment is increasingly represented in the intangible drivers like innovation, process, people, ideas and R&D.

Our Business and Technical Teams are trained to identify the compelling "value adds" with our clients in order to develop the tangible "value Creation" roadmap. Bringing the right subject matter experts from our collaborative partners helped us to minimize the turnaround time to demonstrate and prove the value. We focused on developing R&D skills, systems, and processes that produce and deliver quality solutions and services. Those are highly valuable to our customers because they consider time to market and early technology adoption both as business-value creators.

The future belongs to those VARs who know how to leverage the emerging technologies to support the ‘value creation’ processes that are as reliable at producing value as past uses of IT have been at cost reduction and optimization. Let us prepare our workforce to become Value Creators for our customers and keep the ‘Channel Eco System’ healthy and happy forever.
